Peer Mentoring Project – Aries Annecy


Pilot Project Aim: to integrate 1st year students to maximise their results at school and ensure the class formation for the following year (business continuity, use innovation in education, make Aries better than other schools). Test the concept and if successful to use for Prepa class in following years.


A Peer Mentor is another student who can serve as a resource, a helping hand, a sounding board, and a referral service. The job of peer mentors is to provide support, encouragement, and information to students in their department who are just beginning the graduate program.Mentoring is a powerful personal and career development tool that can enable the mentee to achieve or exceed their life’s goals and aspirations. A mentor according to Merriam-Webster is ‘a trusted counselor or guide’. … Depending upon the mentee’s needs a mentor: Shares knowledge and life experiences.

Business case: The higher success rate, the higher number of students, the higher morale of students and teamwork, the higher recommendation rates for potential students. Year 2016/2017 issues with Prepa could be avoided by providing additional advice from other students who went through the same experience and can share their lessons learnt.

The benefits for 1st year:

• Better understanding of challenges ahead

• ‘Buddy’ system – possibility to ask questions someone who is not a teacher, possibly a higher trust, less problems with accepting facts/authority/feedback

• Learning by shared experience

• Smooth transition from ‘lycee’ teaching approach to Aries teaching approach (taking responsibility for their actions – no more dog ate my homework)The benefits for the last year students:

• project roll out in English, further comms in French• development of teamwork skills• development of managerial skills

• increased motivation and organisation skills due to ‘lead by example’ expectations

• development of training/mentoring/ emotional intelligence/comms skills

• use of google drive for feedback forms/Facebook for class groups

2. Scope

Students from the 3rd year to peer mentor students from year 1 – on Aries related activities.

3. Timeline Project

to take 3 months (TO DISCUSS) Roll out:Peer Mentoring: Start in September 2017 – end early Jan 2018 (3 months).If successful, to be continued until the end of the academic year. Depending of the time constraints for last year students.The first week of school: Year (then) 3 to deliver a briefing session on the project to year 1 (group sessions) with the teacher. 1st year students to be assigned to specific peer mentors.  Group of 3-4 students to present to their mentees the programme. This equals 4 presentations. Same power point, followed by discussions in smaller groups to reduce the group resistance.

4. Cost

Teacher: Additional time – TO DISCUSSStudents: Additional time – it will be investment in their futureRecognition at the end of the year for Peer Mentors: Certificate/small gifts etc. Mentees could submit (in English of course) a nomination letter, school management to choose the best nominations.

5. Quality

To be monitored by the class representatives (year 2) and one teacher, open door policy. Students’ ownership. Code of conduct.Taking minutes (notes) at each session with actions to follow up on.

6. Human ResourcesMentoring students – 131st year students – TBD Ratio: 1 peer mentor for 2 studentsTeacher to help with project roll out, presentation preparations and initial issues/questions.

7. Communication• Group meetings• Students to communicate through Facebook – groups for each year –

8. Risks • No commitment from students either year• No commitment from management• Poor programme management• No clear objectives• No enthusiasm or short-term enthusiasm.
